There certainly is a lot to viewing the WIP. Are there too many stories in process? Is someone about to start work on yet another? Can everyone tell by looking at the (virtual) card wall who is working on each task? Does it look like we're going to meet our commitment? Am I surprised by any new tasks that have been created? Are certain tasks being neglected? Is everyone contributing? Is development close to completing a story but hasn't yet gotten feedback from the customer? Have we neglected to get feedback from the customer from stories that are even further along? Etc.

The list is too long to explicitly think through each of these questions, but with experience, one can scan the WIP and spot issues along these lines.
